Chapter Eleven
THE LAST few days had been great. Stuart had spent most of his time with Ryan, and not all of it in bed. Ryan was lovely, with a wicked streak and dark sense of humor that complemented his own. Stuart was determined to see more of him, but it didn’t mean Stuart was ready to introduce him to his mum.
“Don’t argue, Stuart. If you’re using my spare ticket, then I get to meet the man who’s making you so excited.”
“Mum!”
“What?”
“He’s here on holiday, not to be harassed by nosey Cornish women. Besides, I might not see him again once he goes home, so why do you need to meet him now?”
“Rubbish. If he lived up the Highlands I might agree with you, but he lives in London, and if I’m not mistaken that’s where all the jobs you’ve applied for are.”
“Not all of them.”
Fiona snorted. “We both know you have no intention of going to Aberdeen, even if the job had twice the funding and the best research project in Europe.”
“I might….”
“Bollocks.”
They shared a stubborn streak, and as she’d told him countless times when he was growing up, she’d had more time to practice. “You’re not going to back down, are you?”
“Nope. So get your shoes on and you can tell me more about Ravishing Ryan on the way.”
She’d always given his boyfriends silly names. Alluring Al, Dishy Dave, Tantalizing Tyron. “Do not call Ryan that when you meet him. Just behave.”
Fiona snorted. “Don’t worry, I won’t show you up.”
“First time for everything,” he muttered under his breath as he put on his shoes.
Fiona whacked him with her overlarge yellow handbag. “Oi, little snot.”
He pointed at the bag. “Please tell me you’re not taking the yellow monstrosity?”
“Careful, Stuart, or I’ll put on the matching shoes. Now move your arse, or we’ll get a crappy seat.”
Resigned to having to apologize to Ryan for his mum, Stuart followed her out of the cottage and locked up. “I’m surprised you’ve time to worry about my love life. What with all the extra hours you’re working.”
“Nice try, but you won’t distract me that easily.”
She was too clever for the dead-end supermarket job she did and the cleaning she picked up as extra during the holiday season.
“I’m merely concerned you’re expending needless energy worrying about me when you could be spending it on your college course.”
“Yeah, right. You know the college is closed for summer. Since when do craft lessons ever excuse a mother from taking an interest in her son?”
“It’s not that. I don’t want you to make too big a deal out of it.”
Fiona looped her arm through Stuart’s. “I’m interested, okay? I know you’re not about to run off and get married, but you have to admit this is the happiest I’ve seen you for a long time.”
“That might have more to do with completing my PhD.”
She gave him a look that said “uh-huh,” then raised her eyebrows as she replied, “Not buying it, Stewie.”
“What do you want me to say? I’ve known Ryan four days.
